Lipoedema and Everyday Comfort: 8 Questions to Ask Your Therapist About Compression

If you live with lipoedema, you're not alone. Lipoedema is a long-term condition that mostly affects women. It causes a build-up of fat in the legs (and sometimes arms) that is often tender, bruises easily and doesn't respond to diet or exercise the way other fat does. It often appears or changes around puberty, pregnancy or menopause.

Many women with lipoedema were told for years to "just lose weight". If that's you, please know it isn't your fault.

Where compression fits in

Compression is something many women with lipoedema talk to their health professionals about, especially for everyday comfort. But every body is different. The right garment, compression level and fit should be worked out with someone who knows your legs.

8 questions to ask your doctor or lymphoedema therapist

  1. What compression level suits me? For example, light (15-20 mmHg) or firmer.
  2. Flat-knit or round-knit? Flat-knit garments are often made to measure. Round-knit garments are smoother and more like regular hosiery.
  3. Do I need different garments for different times? For example, one for work, one for exercise and one for travel.
  4. How long should I wear compression each day?
  5. How should I measure, and when? Many people measure in the morning, before legs swell.
  6. How do I put it on without hurting my skin or hands? Ask about donning aids and gloves, or easier-entry designs.
  7. How often should garments be replaced?
  8. Are there signs I should stop and check in with you?

Where VYVE comes in

We designed VYVE after watching my wife Adele struggle every morning to pull on her compression. VYVE is not a replacement for a garment your therapist has prescribed. But many women tell us they love it for everyday comfort, travel or lighter days:

  • A full outer-leg zipper, so you step in instead of dragging tight fabric over tender skin.
  • Gentle graduated compression of 15-20 mmHg, firmest at the ankle.
  • A soft, smooth, 100% opaque fabric with a stay-put waist that doesn't dig in.
  • Two discreet pockets for your phone and keys.
